Nievería is 10 kilometers from the center of Lima, however it is one of the poorest marginal areas of the city. The appearance of Nievería is surreal. Its land is marked by large “gaps” because the majority of the population works by making adobe bricks by hand. This is one of the few jobs that almost all the inhabitants aspire to, whose salaries are $150 dollars per month per family.
The land is not divided, access is restricted due to the lack of public transport, and its inaccessible access precludes the urban development of the population. Many look for work outside the community to improve their salary, which means a reduction of 40% of their current salary, leaving very little for the survival of their families.
The migrants who accessed the land do not own them and their homes are overcrowded. There is a high rate of overcrowding, with several families coming to live in the same small house. This situation usually leads to a confusion of limits and generations, and there may be abuse and bewilderment.
Access to food is restricted. The Municipality created a popular dining initiative that no longer works.
Since work is not formal, there is exploitation, abuse and slavery. Women often work in the lands that remain, working since dawn, bent over in crouches under a heat that wears away their bodies.
Then they pick up their children and feed them and accompany them in the evenings. Mothers abandoned by their partners rent small rooms and go ahead in the midst of so much deprivation, due to informality, the judgments for food cannot be established.
Access to medical services is also distant. There is a post although the schedules and availability are reduced. Pharmacies abound and charge high fractional prices, so the grocery store usually trusts families at high and fractional prices.
They need to strengthen their self-esteem, security and emotional independence. We have identified high rates of child abuse and sexual abuse. Adolescents have difficulty tolerating rules, leading to teenage pregnancy, school delay, school dropout, absence of a life project, addiction to internet games, gangs.
In the families, support will be sought in topics related to couples, family violence, alcohol consumption, mistreatment of women, depression, among others.
The inhabitants need a space for listening and containing their emotional needs. These are the matrix of psychic fragility that makes it impossible to get out of poverty and difficulties that come from precarious childhoods, dysfunctional families and helplessness.
It is a population that does not have much access to the legal, so many abuses are committed: fraud in the sale of land, sexual abuse, family violence, failure to pay, among others.
